COMM398A: Selected Topics in Communication: Rhetorical Analysis Methods in Terrorism Studies
(January 2-January 22)
This course will familiarize students with the peer-reviewed literature in the communication discipline that has relevance to understanding the causes and consequences of terrorism. Using a case study approach, students will learn which rhetorical methods may be applied appropriately to lines of inquiry in terrorism studies. Methods modules will cover narrative and metaphor analysis, dramatism and fantasy theme analysis, ideological criticism, feminist criticism, visual rhetoric, and social movements. Topical modules will encompass governmental and public responses to terrorist threats and attacks, media analysis and framing, and consideration of information and communication technologies in the communication of and response to terrorist threats.
Pre-requisite: Successful completion of COMM401.
